GTA 6 Needs Multiple Cities

San Andreas’ map was revolutionary. It was detailed, full of character, and, of course, it was huge. Expectations were high for what would come next. If Rockstar could create a map like San Andreas on the PS2, what could they do in the future with better hardware, more manpower, and more money?

What they did do was somewhat unexpected. GTA 4 and 5’s maps were much more detailed than their PS2 predecessors. They both had strong and distinctive tones. But in terms of scale, GTA 4 was smaller, and GTA 5—though technically larger—felt smaller to many GTA fans.

TimeSplitters 4 Footage Leaked (It’s Terrible)

One week ago, Embracer shut down Free Radical and cancelled TimeSplitters 4. It was devastating news—the game we had anticipated for so long was lost to us once again … or so we thought.

Yesterday, footage of the game, titled TimeSplitters Next, leaked online. What the footage shows is both depressing and eminently predictable.

GTA 6 Should Reveal the Map Slowly (Unlike GTA 5)

The most iconic part of every GTA game is the map. They are the most visible feature, playing a large part in shaping the distinctive character of each game. They are the sandbox on which the missions, story, and free-roam experience are built.

One thing Rockstar used to do well was encourage players to savour their maps. Since GTA 3, players would start on one island, complete chapter one, move to the next island, and so on. This process made great use of each area of every map. Players grew familiar with the streets, buildings, and shortcuts in one area before moving on to the next.

Update: Hopes for a new TimeSplitters are dead once again. While sad, this essay is still worth reading for its exploration of what might have been and its commentary on the gaming landscape in general.

In an interview with USGamer, David Doak, co-designer behind GoldenEye, Perfect Dark, and TimeSplitters, said that TimeSplitters was conceived as a “social experience”, similar to Fortnite. He spoke of the series’ aesthetic and gameplay variety, exaggerated characters, and comical tone. The intent behind these features, he explained, was to create a game (and later trilogy) that supports casual, varied, upbeat fun with friends, free of the seriousness and competitiveness of most other shooters.

How to Play Shooters: Stop Trying to Get Kills

The objective of a shooter is to get kills. Even when an objective isn’t explicitly focused on this end, getting kills is usually at the top of gamers’ minds.

But should it be? You may ironically find shooters more enjoyable if you focus less on shooting and more on surviving.

Imagining a Better GTA Online: Career Mode

Daydreaming is fun. I’ve been a daydreamer since I was a kid. One of my favourite forms of daydreaming is coming up with ideas for games I’d love to play.

Below is my idea for a big new mode for GTA Online. It’s basically a full-priced game unto itself. I don’t expect Rockstar to make anything like it or even read this post. But I had fun writing it, and I honestly think my idea would make for an awesome game. It’s fun to think about it, even though it will never happen.

Boltgun delivers a potent power fantasy, but the thrill of being powerful wanes due to a lack of challenge in the mid-to-late game.

What is a power fantasy?

A power fantasy is an imagined scenario in which one imagines being far more powerful than in real life.

They may imagine themselves as a legendary warrior, superhero, ruler, or god.

Video games enable players to engage with such fantasies in the confines of a virtual world. Rather than imagining themselves being powerful, video games render the fantasy for them.

Will Timesplitters 4 Have Fewer Features?

The guy wakes up from coma meme. He asks if Timesplitters 4 is out. The nurse tells him 'I hope you like microtransactions'.

Update: Turns out, it won’t have any features at all! Free Radical has been closed once again and TimeSplitters 4 is not happening. The only solace TimeSplittes fans can find is that the game may have been riddled with predatory features anyway. Not a great coping mechanism, but us TimeSplitters fans are pretty used to coping at this point.

The TimeSplitters games are uniquely content-heavy. Whereas most shooters—both then and now—feature a single-player campaign and multiplayer component, all three TimeSplitters games have a campaign, challenge mode, multiplayer (featuring an abnormally large number of modes), and a map maker. Each game has also included split-screen co-op for all modes, bots, and a diverse range of maps, weapons, and playable characters stretching across several time periods and pop culture genres.
